From the beginning, men have schemed with the things of the world and these have schemed with them. Thus Archimedes, with his colossal concave mirrors, machines and is himself machined in defense of his city, Syracuse, against the Roman invader. The writer himself, rather than a user of the typewriter, turns out to be a piece of the machine-writing, an agent of a machinic process that changes him, because we do not write according to what we are, but we are according to what we write.
