The amazing growth in the use of the World Wide Web (WWW or Web) has already led to a large number of Web-based database applications. Due to the continuing progress in the communication and information technologies, however, experts assume “the revolution yet to happen” [10] in the Internet. In this paper, we discuss the concepts and techniques used to implement Web-based DB applications. First, we analyse typical DB applications provided in the Web in order to determine suitable criteria for their evaluation. After the classification of these applications, we survey the spectrum of available implementation techniques, before we discuss each of them in detail. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
Die rasche Verbreitung und einfache Nutzungsmöglichkeit des World Wide Web (WWW) hat heute schon zu einer Vielzahl Web-basierter Datenbankanwendungen geführt. Man geht jedoch davon aus, daß das eigentliche Wachstum des WWW und seiner Anwendungen durch die Fortschritte in der Kommunikations- und Informationstechnik erst noch bevorsteht [10]. In diesem Beitrag stellen wir die bei der Realisierung Web-basierter DB-Anwendungen eingesetzten Techniken vor. Hierzu untersuchen wir zunächst typische DB-Anwendungen, die über das WWW abgewickelt werden, um sie anhand ihrer Kriterien charakterisieren zu können. Daran anschließend diskutieren und analysieren wir nach einem Überblick die unterschiedlichen Realisierungstechniken im Detail. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
