The use of computer-based simulation models in marketing education is well-established. However, the combination of such simulation models with modern communication technologies as a core component of distance-learning projects is a relatively new approach. But what are the advantages and disadvantages associated with the use of simulations in distance learning? What practical difficulties are encountered when implementing this approach? A co-operative project involving partners in several countries has been established to answer these questions by testing a computer-based marketing simulation model (Markstrat) using the IT infrastructure provided by the Internet. Although specific problems do have to be solved, the experience so far indicates that there are a range of synergistic and educational benefits to be gained from using this distance-learning approach.
