This article examines the question on whether Java can continue its success on the server side and become competitive on the client side. Ironically, Java's current critical battle is in server-side applications Sun's Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE), an open technology framework that integrates many components, is the primary player. In the other corner is Microsoft's .NET, also a technology framework but with a focus on technology shift that is consistent with the company's vision of Web-service-centric computing. In client-side applications, Java does not have a strong track record of success but the main new hope for Java is Tiger, the nickname for JDK 1.5, which many view as the most important release in Java's history. And once again, recent market shifts seem to be in Java's favor because more users are abandoning Windows and Unix in favor of Linux, which is doing particularly well in the server market.
